Christianity QA » Islam Christianity » Some Thoughts For Americans
Question:
Jesus Christ is not an American. In fact his origin is that of the Middle East, a place filled with "ragheads" and the "dirty Islamic bastards" who attacked the US. For a country so filled with those who claim to believe in Christ it’s rather ironic that if Jesus was alive today we would be profiling him at airports. So much for "God Bless America". Speaking of which, we shouldn’t be saying "God Bless America" in the first place. I wonder where some people get the notion that God cares about nationality. For a nation, the world leader no less, which prides itself on ethnic, cultural, racial, and especially religious diversity we seem strangely insecure that we must spout off about God blessing America. It would be much better to say "God Bless Every One". I know that God exists. That’s really the point, isn’t it? I know this but I don’t subscribe to any one religion because God is larger than the scope of human belief. I also know that the God of Islam is the same as the God of Christianity. Sometimes I think that the people who bicker the most about which religion is ‘correct’ and which prophets are valid are the same people who know the least about what they’re talking about. My last thought is about terrorism and the frightening state of the modern world. This is our test, as humans. The true trial is not the one between the terrorists and the law rather it is between us and our own moral convictions we claim to love but don’t always practice. I’m sure we can defeat terrorism, I’m just not sure it will be done by using the same singleminded view of the world that still exists in the US, and the West in general, today. That’s the real test. We can look at the world, see it, embrace it, change it, learn from it, or we can pretend it’s not there and pretend there’s nothing wrong in the US. If we are true world leaders, we can demonstrate our leadership by fixing ourselves. Not just for our own sake, but for the sake of the world. Christmas is not just a holiday that celebrates Jesus. Like Ramadan, it is a time of introspection and renewed faith, it is about starting anew. Different people practice this in different ways and that’s the beauty of it all. I have faith that humanity will rise above anger, fear, and intolerance if we make a true effort to see the bigger picture. Merry Christmas to everyone. The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy god.
Response:
Well said. "God Bless America" has nothing to do with god or religon – it is the same as any "catch phrase" attitude behind any cult demonization. It’s just the other side of the same coin as degrading others because they are not on "Our side" (or – The Master Race). From one AMERICAN who is NOT on the side of "god bless America!" – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -Jesus Christ is not an American.
