I can tell you’ve never been in the military.  They just don’t allow you to You are correct sir. do the job half-assed.  If they did and you found yourself in a combat zone, that’s exactly how you would wind up. I am not saying that the "army" wouldn’t get more out of them then they wanted to give. But attitude is important and I got to believe that someone who wanted to be there will score better on the attitude test. I am fairly sure that many of the draftees would do just as well but could the others hurt the team? Would you like to take a couple solders into combat with you that are not up to snuff?

Well they didn’t do too bad in WWII, Korea and Viet Nam, and the concept has certainly worked in Israel.  My point is we are going to be in Iraq for a long time, and the war against terrorism is far from over.  Enlistment is down.  It’s simply a matter of time.

Second, Volunteers are the way to go because they asked to be there. Draftees are more prone do the job half assed of just give 90%. Providing health care to all Iraqis is sound policy.  Providing health  care to all Americans is socialism. HMOs and insurance companies have the best interests of the public at heart. Global warming and tobacco’s link to cancer are junk science, but creationism should be taught in schools. A president lying about an extramarital affair is an impeachable offense.  A president lying to enlist support for a war in which thousands die is solid defense policy. Government should limit itself to the power named in the Constitution, which includes censoring the Internet. The public has a right to know about Hillary’s cattle trades, but George Bush’s driving record is none of our business. Being a drug addict is a moral failing and a crime, unless you’re a conservative radio host. Then it’s an illness, and you need our prayers for your recovery. You support states’ rights, which means Attorney General John Ashcroft can tell states what local voter initiatives they have the right to adopt. What Bill Clinton did in the 1960s is of vital national interest, but what Bush did in the ’80s is irrelevant. Feel free to pass this on. If you don’t send it to at least 10 other  people, we’re likely to be stuck with Bush for 4 more years. Former draftee here, too.  Only lottery I ever won. I agree about reinstating the draft – those that don’t/won’t participate in the military can go the Peace Corps (or other, non-military) route. Military/Peace Corps service *does* build good moral character…but, like Bob Gee, my character has high morale but the moral part is debatable. Loren
