The Interfaith Pilgrimage of the Middle Passage is a remarkable opportunity…"  -Tutu The Interfaith Pilgrimage of the Middle Passage is a twelve-month walk through the eastern United States, the Caribbean, Brazil, West Africa and South Africa. It will retrace the history of slavery by foot and continue by boat, reversing the direction of the Middle Passage. A parallel branch of this Pilgrimage will retrace the origins of the Trans Atlantic slave system through England and Europe. The Pilgrimage will deliberately seek out sites of suffering and death such as slave auctions, slave quarters and lynching. Local people will recite the history that took place at these sites. Prayers and offerings will be made for the spirits of those who suffered and died. We will also visit the way-stations of the Underground Railroad as well as other sites attesting to the monumental courage and conviction of those who worked for freedom and human dignity in the face of slavery and racial oppression. ..we walk through this history to nourish seeds of genuine consciousness, so that in the next century, a more humane, compassionate and equitable world can be realized. Walking can be a potent medicine for mind and body. The Interfaith Pilgrimage of the Middle Passage, initiated by the Buddhist order Nipponzan Myohoji, is being organized by a group of people of diverse backgrounds and is open to all who wish to join and agree to its purposes and principles. It will have an Interfaith perspective, whenever possible involving the traditions to which African-Americans and people of African descent have primarily devoted themselves, that is Christianity, Islam and the traditional religions of Africa and their forms in the "New World."
