Response:

Ah yes, blind faith indeed.  That’s what Christianity all comes down to in the end.  Oh sure, we Christians have two thousand years of the recorded experiences of previous Christians, and the purported words of our Savior himself, but those are just words in books written, translated, and (perhaps most importantly) *read* by mere mortal men using that most inefficient method for transimitting ideas which we call language.  In the end, the only thing we really have is that intangible personal experience of God which can come only from that blind faith.  It could indeed be just "voices in our head" — a byproduct of our "overactive imaginations."  The divine guidance we feel could just be our own thoughts (if in fact there even is such a thing as "our own thoughts" or "our own imagination").  But is well placed blind faith such a bad thing?  The nature of mankind is to seek the truth. The conceit of mankind is to assume he will recognize and understand the truth if it is revealed before his eyes.  Indeed, if Jesus is God, his earthly form was simply for the benefit of mankind’s limited capacity to understand the nature of God.  If mankind weren’t trapped in the (possibly illusory) framework of (more or less) linear time, we might have the intillectual capacity to understand the proof of God’s existence.  For now, though, in our limited imaginations, all we have is the faith you speak of. We’ll all know the truth soon enough (or not).  In the meantime, what has our faith in the unseeable and unknowable cost us and what has it gained us? Are the faithful locking themselves out from any earthly experience which would otherwise have benefited them or others?  On the other hand, are they gaining earthly experiences which they otherwise would not have had?  If so, are those experiences a benefit or a detriment for them or for others?  I’ve already answered these questions for myself (with God’s help).  Don’t you think everyone needs to do the same for themselves? For Dan Fake… What do you mean by "maxing this one experience….?"  what aspect of the experience should we focus on?  I, for one, don’t have the capacity to do it all.  Not enough time in the day.  Which part do you recommend? By the way, I’m not much of a theologian.  Did Buddha, or Mohammed, or any other ancient holy person apart from Jesus ever claim to BE God?  This is an honest question, not just baiting.  To my knowledge, Jesus is the only one who ever claimed to BE God.  If so, it’s not a matter of choosing among them.  It’s only a matter of whether we believe His claim or not (i.e. blind faith). By the way, Craig.  I disagree with your assertion that God does not speak to most people.  I would agree that most people (including myself for almost my entire life so far) do not listen to what God has to say to them.  You then might assert that what believers "hear" from God is just a by-product of their entire information intake since conception.  I agree that *could* be true and that we (in our limited capacity to understand, think, and imagine) can *never* know for sure.  Hence, as you so eloquently stated, the need for *blind* faith.  Now that I think about it, I have to ask my blind friend Josh about his concept of color.  He has been blind since birth. Hence, he can have no direct experience of color.  Yet, I’m sure he knows of the concept of color as described to him (most unsatisfactorily to Josh I’m sure) by seeing people.  Does color actually exist?  Josh certainly can’t be counted on to prove it.  Why should I, as one who sincerely believes that color exists be considered a more reliable witness to it than Josh? Couldn’t color be merely an invention of mankind’s collective imagination? Oh sure, the chemical receptors on the retina react differently to different colors, but couldn’t that just be a coincidence?  What’s the connection (if any) between those electrical responses and the (also potentially illusory) process we call thought.  If you get right down to the root, belief in the existence of *anything* in the universe (most of all ourselves) is a creative act of pure, unadulterated, blind faith. Brian

To whomsoever will. No matter what, belief in God is a creative act, you must make the choice.

No it’s not. It’s subjective to the revelation God gives of Himself. For the most part anyways, God does not speak to most people.

An untruth. God speaks to all, and to all He says: come. Christians follow the writings of those to whom God has supposedly spoken. In this case, Christians are choosing to take that person’s word for it.  They’re blindly following another human’s writing.

A mistake. You are to follow God. The writings of man only serve as a foundation. And if God Himself doesn’t lead you through the writings, then they are worthless, empty, and void of the true meaning. But let’s say that God DOES speak to you. How are you to know that it’s God and you’re not just going insane?

Have you not heard of the power of God? One way God proves Himself is by restoring sanity, not taking it away. It may seem far fetched, but if you think about it, there’s no way to ever know that God exists. It all comes down to faith:  pure, unadulterated, BLIND faith.

Utter, untrue, nonsense. You can know. God proves Himself. And you mistake faith with belief. Faith is not believing, it is knowing. Why are calling me a liar?  My statement may be incorrect, but I am not engaging in deliberate falsehood. Any person who has heard God and known Truth, is able to teach any other this same way so the other may come and hear for themselves this same Truth. Example; Jesus of Nazareth.

But what makes you think Jesus was actually doing this, and not Mohammed, Buddha, Sri Chinmoy, or any of the innumerable persons, famed and forgotten, who have claimed divine revelation? tim gueguen 101867

Recommendation – live free of the God myth. Know no God and know the truth. Yet God as defined by God, IS. Recommendation – live free of the beliefs of man Know God and have truth. Nice reply, mighty1 … If God only talks to a few, what are the rest of us (tens of billions) to do, follow our wits or blindly follow one of the claims of one of the handed down stories from the ancients? If blindly following one of the claims, which one, how can you tell it’s true, and how do you go about distinguishing between the true ones and the false ones? If you can’t distinguish true claims from false claims, doesn’t that invalidate the claims or should you just pick one (perhaps one that mates to your social-cultural support system), blindly follow, and not concern yourself with validation of any kind? A lie. Any person who has heard God and known Truth, is able to teach any other this same way so the other may come and hear for themselves this same Truth. Example; Jesus of Nazareth.

Response:

Very simple; stop listening to and following the teachings of man and his religions and seek the Living God. God speaks to all mankind. Those who have learned how to hear, hear.

Why follow another at all? God is no respecter of persons. He speaks to all who will listen. Follow God Himself from where He is found.
