Christianity QA » Christian Faith » Who is it Really That Teaches The Doctrine of Hell?

Question:

The above information has not been posted by the official Watchtower Bible & Tract Society but by one of Jehovah’s Witnesses using his own initiative.

Tee hee hee.  A JW posting under the screen name of "Truth" is a rather clever oxymoron.  Thanks for entertaining us, and now you are dismissed, you wretched troll. Dave

Response:

Regarding the idea of eternal torment in a fiery hell, the Catholic periodical Commonweal (January 15, 1971, p. 370) notes: "For many people, some philosophers included, hell answers a need of the human imagination-a sort of Santa Claus in reverse. . . . Who among the righteous doesn’t like to see the unjust get punished with some equity? And if not in this life, why not in the next? Such a view, however, is not compatible with the New Testament, which invites man to life and to love." As to the doctrine of purgatory, the New Catholic Encyclopedia frankly admits: "The Catholic doctrine on purgatory is based on tradition, not Sacred Scripture."-Vol. 11, p. 1034. How can you give any response that is clear when the text you quote from has been so chopped up, as to be unrecognizable from Christian Scripture. From ZENET: POPE EXPLAINS HELL IS REJECTION OF GOD  NOT Divine Punishment But HUMAN CHOICE. VATICAN CITY, JUL 28 (ZENIT).-At his usual Wednesday morning general audience, which today was held in the Paul VI Audience Hall and attended by 8,000 people from different parts of the world, the Pope spoke about Hell as the final rejection of God.
