Christianity QA » Christian Faith » Shouldn't it be the Constantine Church?
Question:
– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – << You are all talking out of your asses. Christianity flourished first through the Roman Empire in Europe, and then centuries later through colonising in the Americas, Africa, etc. I love reading morons pontificate on the basis of their ignorance. The church of India flourished under Hindu rule, without connection to the Roman Empire. The Assyrian Church, known in some quarters as the Nestorian Church, was, until the last few centuries, a strong presence in the Muslim ruled lands know known as Iraq and Persia, neither of which were ever under Roman Rule. << In the Far East which was too far away for long term European colonising, you see very little strength in numbers of the Christian faith. Is that why the world’s largest parish (over one million faithful) is in Seoul, Korea? Granted, it is not Catholic, but Assemblies of God. Nevertheless, Christian. Is that why pre-war Vietnam had a very strong Catholic community? Why is it that anti-Catholics tend to be among the most ignorant among us? Considering many of the ignorant anti-protestant statements I would say it was about equal all round.
Well, you know Sturgeon’s Law. Of course, my corollary to Sturgeon’s Law is that out of the 90% of everything that’s crap, there’s about 10% that’s truly vile. — Mark

You are all talking out of your asses. Christianity flourished first through the Roman Empire in Europe, and then centuries later through colonising in the Americas, Africa, etc. If you think that Christianity is big in Latin America (say) because of the quality of some missionaries who went out there in the 15th century, you are living in a fool’s paradise. These lands were conquered for Christianity by the Europeans. In the Far East which was too far away for long term European colonising, you see very little strength in numbers of the Christian faith.

Bearing mind that the Emperor Constantine MADE the Catholic Church, by making it the state church of the Roman Empire: shouldn’t the Catholic Church have always been named the Constantine Church?
You’ve got your history wrong. Constantine 1) moved the capital from Rome to Constantinople, 2) set up the new church there in competition to the church or Rome, 3) held the first Eastern council at Nicaea, establishing the grounds for the Imperial Church and its conciliarism. In short, you’d be more right in referring to Constantine as the founder of the Greek Orthodox Church. Within 100 years of this, Rome was sacked, became the possession of a succession of Arian Christian barbarians, and gradually became a city of ruins. It was not until 800 a.d. with Charlemagne that the church had a protector and began to recover from its destruction. By 1000 it was starting to recover, and the foundations were laid for the Medieval Papacy, which for the most part was able to successfully remain an independent spiritual force in the birth of Western civilization. You could call it therefore the "Charlemagne" church, although the Carolingian empire really didn’t last all that long. But the Constantine Church more accurately refers to the Orthodox than the Catholics.

Interesting take. But it was wasn’t called the first Eastern council at Nicaea. It was called the Council of Nicaea and affected the whole Church, because at that time, their was only one Church.

Not really. Historically there have been many Christian converts in Japan, China and elsewhere in the Far East, but strong and severe government persecution has put the damper on that. Even today the underground Church seems to be growing strongly in communist China despite persecution. Conquest has certainly helped spread Christianity, much as it did for Islam, but brave and devout missionaries have had an enormous impact on the spread of the Faith.

Bearing mind that the Emperor Constantine MADE the Catholic Church, by making it the state church of the Roman Empire: shouldn’t the Catholic Church have always been named the Constantine Church? Most Catholics are dumb about this. Without Constantine’s huge act of making the church (by decree) the state religion of all Europe, Christianity would have died out long ago. These are uncomfortable facts which the church tries to forget. Ivor
Uncomfortable with the fact that the Roman Emperor we know as Constantine the Great ended the persecution of Christians because of his Christian mother, St. Helena? Uncomfortable with the fact that he later embraced Christianity and was baptized himself? Why? Response:
Constatine did not make the Catholic Church! Christ built the Church through Peter. The Church still stands today as the CC. Now Constatine didn’t make the Church, he passed a decree in 313, i think it was, which stated that Christianity was the official religion of the Empire. The Church had long since been around, almost 300 years, before he made his decree. Just because he made it the offiial religion doesn’t mean he made the Church. And besides I think the Church would have persevered even if he had not passed this decree, to see an example of this look at the Jews and how they have perseveered through all their opposistions. Response:
You have things a little backward. Constantine halted the persecution of the Catholic Church because it had already become a force to reckon with within the Empire — in spite of determined efforts by Constantine’s predecessors to exterminate it. Constantine may have been no saint, but he was no fool, either. He would hardly have elevated the Church to a state-recognized status (it was his successors who made it the sole state-approved religion) if it had been an obscure sect threatened with extinction. Moreover, huge tracts of Europe that were not part of the Roman Empire at all subsequently embraced the Catholic Faith. Not to mention Christian Ethiopia and Armenia, which were totally outside the Roman orbit. So your historical basis is a total washout. Paul

CHAPTER VIII.–LET NOTHING BE DONE WITHOUT THE BISHOP See that ye all follow the bishop, even as Jesus Christ does the Father, and the presbytery as ye would the apostles; and reverence the deacons, as being the institution of God. Let no man do anything connected with the Church without the bishop. Let that be deemed a proper Eucharist, which is[administered] either by the bishop, or by one to whom he has entrusted it. Wherever the bishop shall appear, there let the multitude[of the people] also be; even as, wherever Jesus Christ is, there is the Catholic Church. It is not lawful without the bishop either to baptize or to celebrate a love-feast; but whatsoever he shall approve of, that is also pleasing to God, so that everything that is done may be secure and valid. snip<
