Question:

Hi I have only just found this newsgroup and am hoping I can find some information for my mum who had a total Gastrectomy (removal of her stomach) in Nov 99, she is losing weight and cannot hardly eat anything without being sick, she has been given some anti sickness tablets but these are of no use, and she seems to be getting worse instead of better.  She is obviously feeling weak and fed up with it all.  I have been trying to find out if there are any support groups in the UK for her to get in contact with or does anyone have any experience of having a gastrectomy as we don’t seem to have much information about it. Thanks February

Here are some links which might be useful. The Stomach Cancer Online Support Group This is an unmoderated discussion list for patients, friends, researchers, and physicians, to discuss clinical and nonclinical issues and advances pertaining to stomach cancer. I think that you or your fatheer could find someone on this list who has survived his type of cancer and its treatments who would be willing to share their experiences and information with you. You can subscribe by going to this link: http://www.oncolink.upenn.edu/forms/listserv3.html and scrolling down to STOMACH-ONC and clicking on SUBSCRIBE Once you’ve joined (it’s free) just post your message to the group and you’ll receive plenty of responses. OncoLink: Post-Gastrectomy Gastronomy A gastrectomy patient’s account of how he learned to cope with, and to a large extent overcome, the discomfort that occurs after surgery. There’s some specific information about eating problems and how he overcame them. http://cancer.med.upenn.edu/disease/gastric/gastrectomy.html OncoLink: Frequently-Asked Questions Related to Gastric Cancer http://cancer.med.upenn.edu/disease/gastric/faq/ I know that you asked for support groups, but this type of FAQ on the subject might be useful as well. I hope some of this is helpful to you. — Judy Bear, Founder Cancer Survivors On Line http://www.cancersurvivors.org ICQ# 4698216

I had a portion of my stomach plus a few other things removed with what is called a "Whipple" surgery. First of all, I looked like someone from one of the death camps. All food tasted terrible (even chocolate eclairs !) To make matters worse, I felt out of control with my body and what was happening to me. The specter of death hovered nearby. When my oncologist heard how depressed I felt she prescribed an anti-depressant which helped me greatly. We have a product called "Ensure", a high energy full of vitamin goodies, etc.  which helped somewhat. Found that Nestles makes a many flavored high energy drink which is cheaper and just as potent. Slowly, I came around. My Christian faith helped me through all of this. It’s crisis times like these that we need to remind ourselves of a loving God’s promises. Don’t be afraid to speak about the possibility of death. Being a Christian,  I found that there seems to be what I’d like to call a "peace that surpasses all understanding" which allows the person who might die an ability to discuss and even joke about their inevitable end. _But_ don’t rule out a prayer for a miracle. Six years later and I’m here. bob
