Question:
Good evening Steve; By the Holy Spirit of the living God, we know and confess that Jesus Christ is Lord and that every word of God proves true. Amen and amen. Those who receive the real Holy Spirit of the Bible speak in other tongues when they do. Those who are led by the same Holy Spirit of the Bible also get baptised in Jesus Name just like in the Bible.
While I agree that your words are true regarding the first step, what about the rest of the journey? What happens after that? This is the context of what you’re responding to. Cheers, John – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – In the Bible when sinners asked "what shall we do?" the Apostles responded (with Peter as the spokesman) and said: Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. They were told to repent, be water baptised in Jesus name to have their past sins remitted, and to receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. Acts 2:39 For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, [even] as many as the Lord our God shall call. Then Peter went on to say that this was the plan for "as many as the Lord our God shall call". Acts 2:40 And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this untoward generation. Acts 2:41 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added [unto them] about three thousand souls. Then about 3000 that received the "word" were water baptised in Jesus name to have all of their past sins remitted. Sins are actually washed away when people are baptised using the NAME of the Lord (His name is Jesus). Acts 22:16 And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord. The other "epistles" like Romans and Ephesians are letters to people who were already Christians telling them how to "stay Christian". Acts 2:38 tells you how to BECOME a Christian, then you need the other books to learn what God expects of Christians. Unless you first become a Christian by obeying Acts 2:38, the other epistles aren’t really addressed to you and the promises aren’t for you. Notice how the Apostles founded the churches and what they told people to do to become Christians. ** Jews when they received the Holy Ghost ** Acts 2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. ** Samaritans when they received the Holy Ghost ** Acts 8:14 Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John: Acts 8:15 Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost: Acts 8:16 (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.) Acts 8:17 Then laid they [their] hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost. ** There was a clear instant sign so that the Apostles knew that they had received the same Holy Ghost that the Apostles had * ** Gentiles when they received the Holy Ghost ** Acts 10:45 And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. Acts 10:46 For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter, Acts 10:47 Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we? Acts 10:48 And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days. ** John the Baptist’s disciples had to be RE- baptised and then they received the same Holy Ghost ** Acts 19:2 He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost. Acts 19:3 And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John’s baptism. Acts 19:4 Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. Acts 19:5 When they heard [this], they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Acts 19:6 And when Paul had laid [his] hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied. Jews, gentiles, Samaritans; all baptised in JESUS name, all spoke in tongues when they received the Holy Ghost. Response:
Good evening Jim;
It’s always interesting to see the kinds of things people will post on these newsgroups. Whatever spirit is at work in a person, that spirit will express itself when given the opportunity. If anyone doubts the Bible’s description of human nature in its fallen state, all one needs to do is scan the news and discussion groups, the message boards, and take a look at human nature in all its glory.
It’s been entertaining, to say the least. Another group, as Mr. Cudjoe mentioned and is far more damaging, are those who claim to love the Lord while spewing arrogance because God is on their side. This is due to immaturity to some extent (newness in the faith), but there is a greater majority whose responses should be much kinder in nature. Otherwise, I quite agree with your assessment. Is the old axiom, a tree is known by the fruit it bares, true? Cheers, John – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – The unbelievers who post in Christian forums are often compelled to speak against the truth of Jesus Christ. This is because they are still dead in their sins and separated from God. They can only speak of the things of this world, as the Scripture plainly says. They have no knowledge of the truth. Being spiritually dead, all they have left is the same inclinations and interests od any dumb animal on this planet. Here is what the Bible says about them: the Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of temptations and to reserve the unjust under punishment for the day of judgment, and especially those who walk according to the flesh in the lust of their uncleanness and despise authority. They are presumptuous, self-willed. They are not afraid to speak evil of dignitaries, whereas angels, who are greater in power and might, do not bring a reviling accusation against them before the Lord. But these, like natural brute beasts made to be caught and destroyed, speak evil of the things they do not understand, and will utterly perish in their own corruption, and will receive the wages of unrighteousness, as those who count it pleasure to carouse in the daytime. They are spots and blemishes, carousing in their own deceptions while they intermingle with you, having eyes full of adultery and that cannot cease from sin, enticing unstable souls. They have a heart-trained in covetous practices, and are accursed children. They have forsaken the right way and gone astray, following the way of Balaam the son of Beor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness… (2 Peter 2:9-15) And Jude says more along the exact same lines in verses 10-13. As I mentioned before, in another post, Christian faith and Christian truth is a spiritual thing — literally. Those who are dead to God are motivated and directed by the evil that dominates the world itself. Paul calls it, "following the course of this world, following the ruler of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work among those who are disobedient." (Eph 2:2) But a wholly different Spirit is at work in those who know and love God. This is because whoever is willing to trust in God through faith in Jesus Christ — anyone who will believe what God is saying about our sin, our need of Jesus, and all that has already been done for us in Jesus (for we are saved by God’s grace, and not by any goodness of our own)– is also given the Spirit of God. We who were once dead in sins, just as the whole world is, were made alive by God’s grace, by the very Spirit of God that also raised up Jesus from the dead. Through Paul, the Spirit says it this way: All of us once lived among them in the passions of our flesh, following the desires of flesh and senses, and we were by nature children of wrath, like everyone else. But God, who is rich in mercy, out of the great love with which he loved us even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ-by grace you have been saved — and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus… (Ephesians 2:3-6) God’s Spirit makes us alive (eternally), and more than that, we who were born into this world as sinners are transformed by that Holy Spirit into the very children of God. The Bible says: If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies also through his Spirit that dwells in you. So then, brothers and sisters, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh — for if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption. When we cry, "Abba! Father!" it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God… (Romans 8:11-16) The Lord Jesus Christ said: "And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Comforter [Advocate, Helper] to be with you forever. This is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him. You know Him, because He lives and remains with you, and He will be in you." (John 14:16,17) Again Jesus said: "But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me." (John 15:26) In another place, the Bible says: And this is his commandment, that we should believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as he has commanded us. All who obey his commandments abide in him, and he abides in them. And by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit that he has given us. Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God; for many false prophets have gone out into the world. By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. And this is the spirit of the antichrist, of which you have heard that it is coming; and now it is already in the world. (1 John 3:23-4:3) So whenever you see the stuff being posted by those who hate God and who have no regard for the truth, don’t be shocked to see a lot of garbage. What else can they do or say? Until God’s grace gets a hold a human soul, it can only continue in the way of darkness. And those who love God and know Him by faith in Jesus Christ cannot help but love the truth. They are possessed of God, filled with the Spirit of truth, transformed into the very children of God’s kingdom. They are filled with the praises of God, the joy of the Lord, the promise and living hope that belongs to everyone who follows Jesus Christ. By the Holy Spirit of the living God, we know and confess that Jesus Christ is Lord and that every word of God proves true. Amen and amen. Jim
