Christianity QA » Christian Church » Was There Ever A Historical Jesus?

Question:

I am somewhat new to this question, but I have been reading a number of scholars who have proposed that there never was an historical Jesus–that the entire story of his life was a myth. Yes, most Gods are myths and never existed.

‘most’ !  surely you mean ‘all’! – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – — Jeremy Martin

Then provide the proof that a god of any kind exists. Things exist.

Big deal. That is not proof of a god. David V. Yosemite Llama Ranch UDP for WebTV

I was aware of the formal difference of opinion regarding Jesus’ divinity, but I didn’t know that anyone had been seriously questioning his very existence. I’d like to learn more about this.  Does anyone have any links or other information that might be helpful?

I was skeptical of such claims, till I read ‘The Jesus Mysteries: The Original Jesus Was a Pagan God’ by Timothy Freke and Peter Gandy. There is a very brief summary of the book’s thesis on this page: http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0722536771/ – Martin Thomas Official "Teddy Bear" Atheist

Things exist. Therefore the sum total of all things exists. The simplest form of the god of pantheism is the sum total of all things. Therefore the god of pantheism exists. As I said, no reason to think of that as a god. But some people do.

No. There is no reason to assume that. — David V. Yosemite Llama Ranch UDP for WebTV

I fixed your rude top posting for you. Why is it that the funnymentalist christians are always so rude? There is no evidence whatsoever to support the opinion the man named Jesus of Nazareth did not exist.

There is. The complete, and total, absence of ANY evidence that the jesus of the bible ever existed is proof enough. — David V. Yosemite Llama Ranch UDP for WebTV

Illogical spew worth nothing. To express this opinion is to reject the testaments.

Reject the Testaments?  No problem. To reject the "new testament" requires the rejection of the "old testament."

Done. In other words, rejection of the evidence of the reality of God.

What makes these two collections stand as evidence of the reality of anything? Many followers of Judaism

You mean those who don’t reject the Old Testament? More illogical spew. plant this seed of doubt in unwary and unprotected minds. Atheists of course jump on the band wagon with their anti-God expressions.

I can’t be anti-anything that I don’t believe in. GlennGlenn

Response:

There is no evidence that the old or the new testament are evidence of the existence of god , all speculation, but then such an idea is beyond the confines of your intellect. Nige.

There are exceptions. Just no significant reason to think of *them as gods. For example, the god of pantheism in it’s simplest form.

It is impossible to determine that he did not exist. The better question is "how much is myth and how much reality?" How much of the Hercules stories are myth? "The tales grow taller on down the line"

Let god = universe. Universe exists. Therefore, god exists. Impersonal pantheism is disproves your idea "all gods so far invented by humans exist only in myths". Here’s another. My dog is god. My dog exists. Therefore, god exists. It’s vacuous to say "all gods are…" without pinning down what you mean by god.
