It is not like anything else. It is what it is. It costs about $5 to $10, that is a small amount of money for something that "could" change your life. I read it because Estelle recommended it. She read it because her ladies reading group chose it to discuss at their monthly meeting. They chose it because Oprah recommended it. That is how it goes. I don’t know anything about Myers Briggs that doesn’t work for me somehow. To each his own. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text ->I liked the first one, but I > can’t quite stomach the second. My parents were both Jewish. I think of myself as a Jew. I never do anything to make it offical except close my business on a couple of holidays. Just as every other part of life I make religion suit me. My belief system is custom designed. "Topher" <creed…@usa.net> wrote in message

To use the terms of "the Four Agreements", you were "hooked" by your parents and society into believing "the dream of the planet’ that was in place when you were born. Now you are changing that dream into your own personal dream. > I consider myself spiritual more in a psychological sense rather than > a religious sense. That is how it worked for me too. I rejected the relgion that was historically mine. I filled my spiritual needs with bits of this and pieces of that. It started when I saw my 1st son being born. It filled me with wonder. I was part of the age of Aquarius and followed the eastern philosphies as did my favorite rock groups. It came into a kind of blurry focus (?) as I was stoned all the time in those days. I even met God one night in the shower. I started reading "Be Here Now" and it all started to make sense. It continues to evolve inside of me even today. That’s the way it is. "Gale" <uniqg…@earthlink.net> wrote in message

OK, I went and looked at the web site, but it didn’t help me figure out if this is my kind of book. Let me ask it this way. Is it more like 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, or like Chicken Soup for the Soul? I liked the first one, but I can’t quite stomach the second. Too much warm fuzzy and soft focus for me. You Myers Briggs types will probably recognize that I am very much a T from this description.

Let me begin by expressing my religious background. Like yourself, I was brought up in a Christian background (including all resulting the joy and pain entailed). I swollowed those ideas whole-heartedly as a child. As an adult, I find too many discrepancies between my own ideas and those of the Christian church. As a result, I choose to make my own path through life. I consider myself spiritual more in a psychological sense rather than a religious sense. I too try to avoid literature that has heavy religious tones. I am not sure why. I am very comfortable with my lack of religious views and I have no need to worry about converting because of something that I read. Having said that, I find the book, "The Four Agreements", very powerful and instructive without centering on any religious grounds. You are correct, that this is highly philosophic and practical reading. The author makes a few references to God in a generic sense. He is careful to note that each reader will come from a different religious/non-religious background. I easily relate to much of his message and I highly recommend it. Even those of us encumbered with organized religion can be in touch with our spirits. It depends. When I was young and grew up in a protestant denomination, I kept looking for some external magic to show God’s power. Dissatisfied, I chose instead to believe in the science I was studying in college. Years later I returned to the same denomination, largely to get backup as a parent when teaching my child right from wrong. This really did not connect on an emotional level until I was deeply hurt and had nowhere else to turn. Now the same old hymns and scripture selections ring with meaning that fits my hopes and fears. I do a lot of reading but often find that I am put off a book because of its author’s expression of religious viewpoints. I am a religious sceptic, brought up in a Christian(ish) background but not attracted to any religion or religious belief. (Yes, I do think lack of faith in a high power does sometimes make life harder.) From the web site, it seems The Four Agreements is at least philosophical but could you please let me know the extent of religious background. Thank you.

Don Luis Ruiz is Mexican. He is the medicine man from a small tribal village. The Toltec indians. He is also an educated man and an MD. The form of the book does not mention religion of any type. This is NOT a religious book at all. It is a book about the self. "Awarness of self" is taught as a simple medicine man would explain the secrets life to his tribe. This is a book about the human spirit and the human condition. It is about what goes into making us what we are and how much of that is beyond our control until we become aware of it. This book makes us aware of what we can do to regain control over portions of our lives. Greg <g…@e-mailanywhere.com> wrote in message

I’ve read and enjoyed the first three chapters now. And I agree that this is one book that can truly change my life in a positive way. I really like how the author talks about heaven and hell in this life and how many people choose the latter path (including me sometimes). I have spent way too much time feeling miserable and blaming other people and society. One message that I am starting to latch on to is that I am responsible for my own happiness and well-being and other people are responsible for theirs. I often wondered why religions push the idea of heaven and hell. I found it hard to relate to that theory. I thought why should I worry about hell after death when I’m living in hell while alive. I am starting to realize that I live my life according to some omninous and often self-defeating standards (other peoples, society’s, religion’s, my own) that I will never meet and I will continuously be let down when I cannot achieve them. I want to be happy, not continuously disappointed. I cannot say whether there is life after death. What I do want to acheive is my own little slice of heaven here on earth. And yes, I see myself re-reading this book multiple times because I enjoy and relate to the message. As for being aware and awake, I would like to believe that I am heading in that direction. Now that’s a coincidence. My wife and I received this book as an anniversary gift last year. I hadn’t looked at it and in fact had forgotten about it, until a few days ago when a friend recommened it. I promptly went to the local bookstore and picked up a copy. I mentioned my new perchase to my wife and she pointed out that we already had a copy. I thought, how wild is it that I went out and bought a book that I already owned. I have read the book. I thought it was wonderful. I recommend it heartily. Of course there is a web site devoted to it and some of the other books Ruiz has written. http://www.miguelruiz.com/ "Topher" <Creed…@usa.net> wrote in message

The woman at my meeting said that it was one of the things that had changed her life. First I will finish reading my Al-Anon literature, however. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -On Tue, 23 Oct 2001 09:32:02 -0400, "urf" <urf…@nospam.com> wrote: >It could change your life. >Dreamspinner3 <dreamspinn…@yahoo.com> wrote in message >news:jan9ttkrrsihnchenri3pg5c92icjh96tt@4ax.com… >> Someone mentioned this book today in my support meeting. Hello All, I started reading a book called The Four Agreements. I really like what I see thus far. The author, Migual Ruiz, offers the reader some great insights and offers some suggestions on how to transform our lives so we can find more peace and happiness. While this book does not directly adress ways to improve marital relations, it does offer ways to improve our lives as individuals. IMHO, this would be a great book to read through by yourself or with your SO. It’s an easy read and their plenty of interesting depth to it. I would be interested in discussing this book with anyone that picks it up. – Topher More info about the book… The Four Agreements : A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom a Toltec Wisdom Book by Miguel Ruiz Paperback – 138 pages (November 1997) Amber-Allen Pub; ISBN: 1878424319 For more details see: www.miguelruiz.com The Four Agreements BE IMPECCABLE WITH YOUR WORD Speak with integrity. Say only what you mean. Avoid using the word to speak against yourself or to gossip about others. Use the power of your word in the direction of truth and love. When you are immune to the opinions of others, you won’t be the victim of needless suffering. DON’T MAKE ASSUMPTIONS Find the courage to ask questions and to express what you really want. Communicate with others as clearly as you can to avoid misunderstandings, sadness, and drama. With just this one agreement, you can completely transform your life. ALWAYS DO YOUR BEST Your best is going to change from moment to moment; It will be different when you are healthy as opposed to sick.
