Consider the following:  NKorea, Russia and many other nations have extensive shelters to survive nuclear war.  We have nothing that could usefully be called nuclear shelter.  We are sitting ducks.  However nuclear war is quite survivable (at least in the short run of months.  I’ll worry about cancer later if I survive the hostilities.  Like the guy said in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid…Hell the FALL will probably kill ya…;)   Even heavy fallout can be survived by sheltering for 2 weeks or so.  99% of radiation is gone by then, but watch out for additional waves. I got several at $10 per 32 gal.  water can be obtained by draining hot weater heaters, pipes, etc. in cities)  In country, cisterns, wells, rain capture, livestock ponds (be careful of contamination…) 3.  Food of the most  simple, inexpensive, long-lasting forms you can get. Bagged brown rice, soybeans, wheat, corn.  Dried fruit like raisins. Lemonade by the gallon in powdered form to prevent scurvy (Am I correct in this?).  Flour, cooking oil for food and candles… 4..  at this point , my analysis tells me none of this is worth a good god-damn if you can’t defend it.  Those who could not or would not believe that danger was approaching will try to beg, borrow or commit armed robbery to get your carefully garnered resources. best to avoid conflict if possible: if it is thrust upon you, you need variety of weapons: rifles for long range, shotguns for closer in, handguns for last resort, knives , maces, set-guns, electrically charged perimeters…whatever it takes… 5.  .  if they show themselves to be evil , rapacious tyrants and enslavers, destroy them without mercy and look to see who is firing with you and who against… 6.  If it’s illegal to do any or all of the above, you are living in a police state about to take its final, fatal steps toward world domination and ww3. this is the situation in many (but perhaps not all areas of the United States and Canada at present — comments?  The High Plains states from Texas to North Dakota and New Mexico to Montana are not far removed from the 1890’s in most areas, and I mean that in a good way  ) relocation may be in order. beyond that, whatever money , transportation, communication, friends ,etc. are obtainable may be useful.  however, the majority will go mad, and beg to be enslaved by Big Brother, and point at you as the enemy.  Take action as needed.  Avoid conflict if possible.  If it is brought to you, let them have it with "both barrels" and reload quickly…If they show themselves as rapacious, tyrannical parasites, destroy them without fear, and reload quickly for the next wave… seek like-minded allies, but be prepared to go it alone if necessary. Wicca is probably the oldest of the semi-organized religions. It invokes the natural forces of nature and worships the primordial forces of the universe to the benefit of humankind. The first law of Wicca is: "First of all, harm no one" During the time of the "Holy" Roman Empire, the Christian church, in effect, declared a war of extermination on the non-Christian religions of Europe. You can start with a few reference books. My first book was a boy scout manual. It was from the 30s or 40s. It is superior in every way to the ones in print now. Outdoor Survival Skills by Larry Dean Olsen is a great survival book. Edible Wild Plants, A North American Field Guide By Outdoor Life Books has color photos of edible plants and is a great reference book. Aircrew Survival is a good Air Force survival manual and The U.S. Army Survival Manual is packed full of info. Primitive Wilderness Living and Survival Skills by John & Geri McPherson is another great survival skills book. I started out by making a survival kit. Start with a good knife and something to make fire with. I prefer a magnesium fire starter. Build up your kit over a period of time. Use a good search engine and type in survivalism. This should give you a few ideas. Next make a 72 hr. kit. This will provide you with food and water and the ability to bugout if necessary. If you prefer a firearm, get one. Start building up your food supply. Set aside some canned food when you go to the grocery store. Go buy a gallon of Ocean Spray Cranberry Juice. When the container is empty use it to store water.  2 liter pop bottles also work well. (Don’t use milk jugs) Remember to add a couple of drops of bleach to the water and store in a dark place. Then you can start thinking about getting a year’s supply of food. Just take things one step at a time. Don’t try to get everything at once unless you have a fat wallet, but don’t be a fool about it. Read the posts here and at misc.survivalism  You can learn more in two weeks than  I did on my own. Get a subscription to the American Survival Guide. Get about six months supply of food and water stocked up first thing. Canned goods, long-term storage foods — what you normally eat, but just more of it.  If you have a "pure water" store around, get water in as large containers as you can manage — one or five gallons usually.  Around here, the five-gallon containers cost $2.65 to fill. Yeah, it’s very expensive.  But it’s also great water.  I can’t drink the tap water any more. Next, read the FAQ guides.  There’s really so much to tell you, but you’ll have to quickly search out the condensed versions so you’ll know the basics.  Buy some seeds if you have any place you can plant a garden.  You may have to guard it, though. If possible, get with a bunch of like-minded people to ease the cost and the burdens of preparing.  Be careful, though.  If things turn really nasty (even nastier than us paranoids believe it will!) then you may find people ratting you out to the FedGovt so they can receive an extra ration or something.  That has happened before in history. Read, read, read!  I have "The Encyclopedia of Country Living" next to me, and it’s GREAT.  $27.95, but tells you literally everything.  Look for The Survival Center in McKenna, Washington.  They have a web page with an excellent book called "Basic Preparedness."  A couple of books by James Talmadge Stevens are "Don’t Get Caught With Your Pantry Down" and "Making the Best of Basics."  The former is "just" a resource guide, like a big phone book.  It’s great, but is only sources.  The latter is a preparedness guide with a few pages of resources thrown in.  Get both if you get either one.  Ted Wright has a book and a video which are excellent.  The problem with them is that they’re focused really on short term — what to do within the first 3-4 days after a disaster hits.  They’re not really long term.  OTOH, the above books are not really focused on the short term, but are excellent for the long term.  Build a library.  If things go as we fear, you’ll have plenty of time to read.  All the above things can be purchased for the $125 to $150 range.  Yeah, it’s a lot of money.  Look at it this way: If you prepare and nothing happens, you can ALWAYS use the food and water, and the knowledge will be useful if there’s a tornado, hurricane, flood, etc.  If you DON’T prepare and a disaster happens, you’ll have to sit around until someone comes to help you. Michael, Baddog summed it up pretty well. The best thing you can do right now is read, read, and read some more. I spent the first two weeks fretting about all sorts of things until I sat down and figured out a few things, such as where will I be when Y2K hits and will anyone else be with me. Surprisingly, these two factors are crucial to your planning. I found this site to be a good place to start: http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Ridge/3041/index.html The fellow who built this site is apparently still working on it (I guess he’s figuring it out as he goes). He’s geared it more toward folks living in and around Washington, D.C., but it’s a great resource to get you thinking about your needs and situation before running off to spend piles of money carelessly. There are also plenty of forums out there to ask questions … you can decide for yourself what’s good info and what isn’t. The moral of this story: Figure out what’s best for YOU. As my dad told me once: Opinions are like assholes, everybody has one. You’ll encounter plenty of opinions on this subject, but only you know what’s best for you and your family. Best of luck, -Alex

Youf food should include stuff you likle, if you hate beens, dont stock them, theres nothing owrse than haveing to survive on food you dont like.  Make sure that the food you buy has all the vitimins and minerals ou need, I.E. Make sure you follow the food pyerimid. Your shotgun should be pump action , such as an Remington 870 or a Mossburg 500 in 12 or 20 guage and should have a modified choke so you can shoot both slugs and shot stock up on shot primarily, No.6 and No.4 are handy, also No.00 , slugs can be expensive but getting a fare abount of them would be a  good idea as bug game is best taken with slug. Keep in mind that this puts fresh meat on the table and protects yourself and your loved ones.   A knife is something your whole family should be equiped with. (Yes, eaven the kids within reason, example: I got my first sheath knife at age six)  Your choice should reflect what you plan to do with it, and in this case,  as a survival knife, you should choose one which maximises edge holding , is made of a good tough high carbon steel (NO STAINLESS) and is from 4-6 inches in length.  My wife and I both own Cold Steel SRKs, we love them. they are 6" long and have a strong blade that is razor sharp. Its got good belly for skinning, and can hack saplings down pretty well in a pinch.  A Machetie is a good addition as well as it can be used like a hatchet  or as a sword and is a bit lighter. I recommend one of the blackie collins typs with a knuckle bow  that protects your hand when useing it in a defencive role. Any more questions, feel free to E-Mail me. why not ss? are you saying that spyderco has bad taste? and is from 4-6 inches in length.  My wife and I both own Cold Steel SRKs, we love them. they are 6" long and have a strong blade that is razor sharp. +++ there is a very simple way to make ’slugs’ out of birdshot loads. the following is a cheap ‘field expedient’ innovation i learned from a shooting instructor: just take a pocket knife and cut thru the plastic case nearly all around the wad area leaving a ‘thread’ of plastic so the ’slug’ like projectile does not separate from the shell prematurely. they do shoot nearly as accurate as the real slugs.  try it, you will like it. BTW,  target loads make the best self defense loads too as the shot  tends not to over-penetrate ones walls into friendly space or territory.++ Your shotgun should be pump action , such as an Remington 870 or a

Mossburg 500 ++ personally i have found the semi auto remington 1100  or 11-87 more reliable than the pumps.   when operating a pump under duress or the excitement of getting a double or triple bird or duck target , many, many, many a shooter have short shucked the slide action and jammed the gun.  with an auto one justs aims and pulls the trigger again and again until the targets are dispatched.   good to have those shotguns with 26" brls and 10 round magazine extensions.  +++ Keep in mind that this puts fresh meat on the table and protects yourself

Wicca is probably the oldest of the semi-organized religions. It invokes the natural forces of nature and worships the primordial forces of the universe to the benefit of humankind. Many Wiccans (including several I know personally) call themselves Witches and/or Pagans – so I don’t think a person needs to take any offense at the label if they use it for themselves. During the time of the "Holy" Roman Empire, the Christian church, in effect, declared a war of extermination on the non-Christian religions of Europe. What followed was several centuries of purges, torture, mass murders, the Crusades,  and the Inquisition. All in the name of saving souls. If they did this to a group who believed in harming no one, imagine what they’ll do to someone who doesn’t like them

All religions have been misused/abused at one time or another – is it any surprise that the most popular one is the one that gets misused/abused the most during a time of ignorance and fuedalism? Had Wicca been as powerful and popular as Christianity, and Christianity as weak, would it have been less prone to such misuse and abuse? Given history, and the fact that Christains have been, are being, as persecuted as any other adherent of a religion, I would not blame the religion itself, but the people misuse/abuse it for their own totalitarian goals. We had a few chickens. Anyway, where can I start to learn?  I realize this will have to be a very "self-motivated" self-teaching.  I find this newsgroup fascinating.  I already have some plans for the Y2K, but they are quite undeveloped.

There is some differences between "Surivalism", "Preparedness", the "Live off the land" people, and the "Self-Reliance" people, but they all share (to one degree or another) one common goal; Self-reliance & Independence It sounds like you may be better served getting subscription to Backwood Homes Magazine, including some of their anthologies, than to jump into a subscription to American Survival Guide. The latter is okay and worth the cost, but you have to be careful – most of their reviews of products read like a marketing brochure from the vendor (I have seen *one* objective review in this mag). Whereas BHM is more down to earth with practical how-to articles. BTW, what’s a Wiccan?

I am not going to touch that with a ten foot pole, too much religious flaming going on in these newsgroups as it is. Suffice it to say a Wiccan is an adherent to the ways of Wicca, some of whom call themselves Witches and/or Pagans. FWIW, LCB

I’d like to expand a bit on TalonV19’s definition. Wicca is an "Earth-based" Religion, one that has no set doctrine aside from the Rede (Summary: "An’ it harm none, do as ye will"). Most people think Wiccans and Witches are the same, but they aren’t, exactly. One can be Wiccan, OR a Witch, OR both. To learn more on the subject, there are many websites you can visit. Just use your favorite search engine.   As for getting started, the replies you’ve already received are excellent guides, so I won’t say anything on it, except to suggest you start NOW!   One more thing…Wicca has absolutely NOTHING to do with Satanism.                              Trinkette (a Wiccan and Witch)
