Devotional Guide For the week of November 10, 2002 The divine amnesty How the Lord’s Supper is a sign To Read: Malachi 1-4 To Know: "For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, ‘This is my body which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.’" (1 Corinthians 11:23,24) Every Christian church celebrates the Lord’s Supper. This event unites Christians. On the night when he was betrayed, Jesus arranged for his own memorial. Jesus did not plan a one-time gathering for family and friends to commend him and comfort one another. Christ created an adaptation of the Passover as the way to remember him. In this way Christ guaranteed that his memory would be perpetuated. By what he did the Lord also revealed his interpretation of his own death. The heart of Christianity is the cross. We moderns hardly comprehend the horror of crucifixion. Death on a cross was reserved for the lowest of the low. Rome reserved crucifixion for murderers and seditionists. Putting a person to death on a cross combined death, crime and shame. Every serious seeker must answer the question, "How can the cross be hope?" The hope in the gospel is an offer of amnesty. Jesus died to forgive sins. Sin is the cause of death and the damnation that follows. Jesus died in the sinners’ stead. The Lord himself made this fact plain to see by the way he instructed the disciples to remember him. They were to eat the bread of the Passover as if it were his body and drink the cup of redemption as if it were his blood. In other words, his death is our life. To Do: We eat from the table of the Lord as an act of faith. This meal is meant to be a sign. Neither the morsel of bread nor the sip from the cup could long sustain life by themselves. It is faith in the risen man whose death is portrayed in the elements of the communion meal that is able to save us to the uttermost. To Ask: Father, my faith is that your Son died for me. 11112$-10282
