Question:

Well, I’m an atheist so I really can’t say, but do you, personally, honestly, believe that there is a god and do you have faith in it? I admit that I don’t believe in god or anything, and I’ve lost a lot of friends over the years, but I still have faith in tomorrow… AKiRA wrote: > why the hell do he want people to be lonely??? > is it because he want to see people suffering…well then he is not better > than satan… > /Jimmy

Loneliness is a minor inconvenience. The bigger question is: if there is a God, then why is there so much suffering and injustice in the world — like starving children in Africa, or all of the holocaust victims. I am not religious anymore, but when I was religious, one of the answers I got for that question is that there can be no joy without suffering. Another answer is that suffering is caused by evil people, and if evil people were unable to cause suffering, then they would be unable to sin and man kind would lose it’s free will, but all of suffering we endure in this life will be negligible in comparison to the eternal joy we will feel in the paradise.

I think you said the key word, Simon, which is "faith." We all have faith in something. If that faith is strong enough, it makes a difference in our lives and the world. Much peace to you. I think the issue is not do much whether or not there is a god, but what god we have faith in. It may be the God of one of the world’s religions, or our God may be money, power, even ourselves. Someone one wrote: "In the begining God created humankind in God’s image and

human kind has been repaying the compliment ever since." I think that’s another way of saying that we create our god in an image in which we are comfortable, even if that god is a mean old man who is without compassion or love. By the way, whoever fed you the line that there can be no joy without suffering was full of bull. My response to that person is found in Psalms 50:9a. I believe that hurt and pain in this life is inevitable. The suffering, however, is optional. That’s something I learned from reading Viktor Frankl, whose book "Man’s Search for Meaning" seems to have much to say about the discussion in this thread. Thanks, my friend, for your input. Much peace to you. It is a simple concept to understand, person is happy to have food if and only if that person experienced hunger. I thing that the reason many of us are unhappy is because we are not unfortunate enough. Unhappiness tend to bring people together, as we are together here in ASL. Also, because we don’t have to worry about our health, source of food, or people trying to kill us, our biggest problem is the fact that we are alone. Who ever heard of starving people complain of loneliness, or of unhappiness in a relationship? So if we are not hungry or in some other immediate danger then why are we so unhappy? Because nature programed us so that we would always want to get to a better position than we are in now. No one can be happy for ever. There is no goal we can reach and stop. We are always driven to get something better. So if any of us stops being lonely, than another problem or goal will surface to occupy our lives. That is why people who win the lottery are often times unhappy.
